Upper Elementary
(9-12 years)

DEVELOPMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS

Children in upper elementary continue within the second plane of development but now demonstrate greater independence, critical thinking and a deepening sense of social responsibility. They are capable of abstract reasoning, long-term projects and complex problem-solving.

At this stage, students are driven by a desire to understand their role in society and the wider world. They are highly social, collaborative and motivated by meaningful work that connects to real-life experiences. The Montessori environment supports this by encouraging independence, leadership and purposeful contribution to their community.

The upper elementary program builds upon the foundation of the Great Lessons, guiding students toward deeper research, critical thinking and interdisciplinary understanding.

Practical life in upper elementary focuses on independence, leadership and real-world application. Students take ownership of their learning and environment while developing life skills that extend beyond the classroom.

Experiences include:

     • Leadership roles and classroom management responsibilities

     • Planning events, group projects and community initiatives

     • Advanced cooking, sewing, gardening and practical skills

     • Time management, organization and goal setting

These experiences foster responsibility, accountability and confidence as students prepare for adolescence.
