DEVELOPMENTAL CHARACTERISTICS
Children in the second plane of development move from the absorbent mind of early childhood to the reasoning mind. They are no longer content with simple facts — they want to know the why behind everything. They develop imagination, moral awareness and a growing sense of justice. Socially, they are eager to collaborate with peers and they thrive on group projects and community-building experiences.
The Montessori lower elementary environment meets these needs by offering big-picture lessons, known as The Great Lessons, which introduce the universe and humanity as a framework for learning. These stories spark curiosity and serve as a unifying foundation for all areas of study.

At this age, practical life extends into responsibility, service and contribution to the community. Children take on meaningful roles in classroom life while also extending their independence.
Activities include:
• Classroom jobs and community responsibilities
• Sewing, cooking, gardening and carpentry projects
• Opportunities for planning events and collaborative work
• Emphasis on grace, courtesy and moral responsibility
Practical life activities help children practice responsibility, accountability and leadership.
